I Tried a 12-Step Skincare Routine for a Week (Never Again)

Bonnie mid-skincare routine, laughing

It started, as all my worst ideas do, at 1am while scrolling. Some girl with impossibly dewy skin looked into the camera and said "your skin barrier is begging you for twelve steps," and I — a grown woman with a whole career in skincare content — whispered "she's right, I only do four" and bought three essences before sunrise.

Day 1 — The excitement phase

The packages arrived and I lined everything up on my counter like a scientist. Oil cleanser, foam cleanser, exfoliating toner, hydrating toner, first essence, serum, second serum (yes, really), eye cream, moisturizer, sleeping mask, SPF, and a face mist "to seal it all in." My bathroom counter looked like a Sephora crime scene. I felt powerful. I felt invested. I was glowing — mostly with delusion, but still.

Day 3 — The pilling incident

Here's what nobody tells you: twelve layers don't layer. They pill. I walked into a brand shoot with tiny product balls rolling off my forehead like my face was shedding its skin. The photographer asked if I was okay. I said "it's the routine," the way people say "it's the economy." I was forty minutes late because the routine itself takes forty minutes. I spent more time layering than sleeping, which is a sentence that should concern everyone.

Day 5 — My face files a formal complaint

By Friday my skin had simply had enough. A breakout along my jaw, tightness on my cheeks, and a general air of betrayal. My face was like "we had a good thing going with four steps, Bonnie, and you threw it away for a girl on the internet." Fair. Completely fair.

So I did what I should've done on day one: I went back to my boring, unfancy, five-minute routine — cleanser, vitamin C, moisturizer, SPF. Within three days my skin forgave me. We're good now. We've talked it through.

Look, if twelve steps genuinely makes you happy, live your life. But I learned that consistency beats complexity every single time — the best routine isn't the longest one, it's the one you'll actually do at 6am when your alarm goes off and your shoot starts at nine.
